Massachusetts tourism features Boston history, Cape Cod beaches, and much more

Massachusetts may be best-known to tourists as the home of Boston-Lexington-Concord, the cradle of the American Revolution, and Cape Cod, a peninsula of dreamy beaches, grassy dunes, and the Cape Cod National Seashore. Several other Massachusetts regions offer plenty of attractions, like art museums, galleries, and whale watching cruises.

Greater Boston, with its international Logan Airport, is the urban hub of the state and all of New England. American Revolutionary history is alive on the city’s Freedom Trail and at the nearby Minute Man National Park. Both are wonderful attractions for children and families. A world-class city, Boston is superb for romantic getaways, offering a variety of hotels, museums, and excellent dining. And don’t forget the world-class Red Sox baseball team at Fenway Park.

Cape Cod, by contrast, is a place for outdoors, beaches, whale-watching, and family fun. The Cape has hotels, motels, waterfront resorts, camping, RV parks, bed and breakfast inns, and lodgings for romantic getaways for every taste. Offshore are the pretty islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, easily accessible by ferry (they even have small airports).

North of Boston region, comprising Cape Ann and the towns of Salem, Gloucester, Marblehead, Lowell, and others, is known for its art galleries, seaside beauty, fine food, and -- in the case of Salem -- its witch museum and annual Halloween festivities. Known here as Massachusetts's Other Cape, the Cape Ann region distills all the natural beauty and history typical of the Massachusetts coast. Plymouth, South of Boston, is known for Plymouth Rock and whale-watch tours and cruises.

In the Central part of the state are Old Sturbridge Village, a living history re-creation of a 19th-century town, along with beautiful towns, farms, the parks for hiking and biking. The western part of Massachusetts has the Berkshires, and the towns of Lenox and Stockbridge, where visitor can enjoy the annual Tanglewood music festival and the Norman Rockwell Museum.
