Boston Fire Department Spring Scramble Golf Tournament

May 5, 2025 - May 5, 2025 420 West Street Boston, MA 02136

Join us at our annual BFD Spring Scramble Golf Tournament to support the Boston Fire Department Relief Fund. Over the past decade, cancer and heart disease have accounted for the majority of on-duty firefighter deaths, and disabilities. Currently a number of firefighters are struggling with devastating cancer diagnoses and undergoing treatment. Cancer awareness and prevention have become a major focus for fire departments nationwide. Statistics show that firefighters are more than twice as likely to develop cancer during their lifetime compared to civilians. In Boston specifically, 67% of firefighters will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Even after additional precautionary measures have been implemented across the Department, the number of cancer diagnoses and deaths continue to rise at an alarming rate. However, there is hope. Recent advances in medical research have provided doctors with new ways to test and screen for cancer and cardiovascular issues. In collaboration with the Boston Fire Department and with the generosity and support of the Boston Firefighters Credit Union, the Boston Fire Department Relief Fund will subsidize the cost of crucial cancer screening and cardiovascular body scans that are not covered by insurance.

Children & Families

The Robot Zoo at Springfield Science Museum

Jan 18, 2025 - May 4, 2025 21 Edwards Street Springfield, MA 01103

Explore the biomechanics of complex animal robots to discover how real animals work. This special exhibition reveals the magic of nature as a master engineer. Three robot animals and seven hands-on activities illustrate fascinating real-life characteristics, such as how a chameleon changes colors and an insect walks on walls and ceilings. Larger-than-life-size animated robots include a chameleon, a platypus, and a house fly with a three-foot wingspread. Machinery in the robot animals simulates the body parts of their real-life counterparts. In the robot animals, muscles become pistons, intestines become filtering pipes, and brains become computers. By comparing anatomy, environments and size of the actual creatures to the mechanic counterparts, The Robot Zoo provides fantastic new insights and hands-on fun for discovering just how animals work. The Robot Zoo was organized by Evergreen Exhibitions.

In partnership with The Mount, the Norman Rockwell Museum presents Readings at Rockwell, featuring local actors reading stories by writers highlighted in Anita Kunz’s exhibition Original Sisters, which honors trailblazing women.

Toni Morrison (1931–2019) was an American novelist, essayist, book editor, and professor. Celebrated for her powerful and richly expressive examinations of the experience of Black women in an unjust world, Morrison won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for her novel Beloved (1987).
